more slit scan kids test renders

I posted a few more test renderings of sample motion to get a better idea of where I want to go with this project. I am fortunate enough to have some people I can sort of choreograph to do these motion tests with, sort of =).

The video samples are not recorded on the best digital video camera in the world. My next test to try out some HD footage and see how painful that is going to be for my computer to process. I'm guessing it may take a while.

I narrowed the gap in the frame displacement to yield a longer twist in the above sample..

I have been doing some new projects in openframeworks lately. I have been having lots of fun. This is a test render from one of my variations on slit scan video. I have bigger concept I am working towards with this project. It will be interesting to see where I get with it.

If you are into generative art and software based art and art tools you should check openframeworks out. It is very similar to processing except it is a framework for c++ and open GL. It is cross-platform and highly extensible. Having played with openframeworks now for a week or so I am pretty impressed with the ease I was able to get something up and running.

I entered a monochrome portrait generator that works pretty well. I have an exe version that generates very high resolution print output too. For a sample of a higher resolution image of Clint Eastwood ( click here png 250k).

To explore the generator for yourself check out the Monochrome Generator (69k shockwave app opens in new window)!

Using the generator is easy, you can go to google images and search for pictures of people and things you want to make monochromes out of. You view the full size image and copy the URL from your browser bar. Click the load image button near the top left of the applet then paste the URL in the provided field. You should see a grayscale image of the picture you chose in the upper left of the applet. Simply click on a color swatch to generate your MonoChrome!

I have been continuing work on several of my other projects recently. I have made more new works than I have time to process for the web right now. I have been rendering new works out very big so I can print them if I get a really good one. Unfortunately they become cumbersome at high resolution.

The image above is one of my new generative slit scan images. I have moved the motion logic into the 3d world as a moving camera as opposed to capturing a row of pixels moving across a frame of video. This project was done in the pre-release version of Adobe Director 11. The updated 3d engine is a great improvement.

I created these modificatoin of Hillary's press photo using XVI32 a freeware hex editor. I have been hanging on to these until Hillary got knocked out of the race but forgot about them until today.. It's a shame to see her go I think she would have been a better democratic candidate than Obama but oh well.

A New Perspective In Politics at Artworks! New Bedford MA

I have entered my Hair Particle Drawing project in A New Perspective On Politics at Artworks! Gallery in New Bedford, MA. Specifically, I entered the smaller Bush portait that was exhibited in Siggraph 2007 last year.

The exhibition features artists’ representations of political figures such as George Bush, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Dick Cheney, Kim Jong-il, John Kerry, Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, Teddy Roosevelt, George Washington, Mao Zedong and more. This should be a fun exhibition, check it out if you are in the area!

500x Open Show 2008: Something Made Easy

From Kerin Arn's several large prisma color genitalia to the subtle humor in the way the members arranged the works, this years 500x Open Invitational Show was a well hung show indeed. Wandering through I could see logical groupings of the works and got a chuckle when I saw some safari photographs adjacent to a painting of a boy hunting a lion with a pellet gun.

The show had a lot of large colorful high impact pieces that looked very good at first glance. When I had the time to come back later, some of the larger pieces I liked initially lost their appeal. Never the less there was a lot of good work to be seen at this show. Bill Barter had a piece in the show "Orange Curve" my wife and I loved but the photo did not turn out. Below are some of my other favorites.

Bryan Gooding "Prayer at an End"

I have seen several of Bryan's works now and I always enjoy them. His assemblages are generally tough to photograph well since they are very three dimensional.

James Lassen "DSCN 1222"

Lassen's painting grabbed me when I saw it upstairs. It reminds me of when I lived in Deep Ellum and haunted various seedy establishments down there for many years. The title implies he painted it from a digital picture, it would be interesting to see if this is part of a series.

Samantha B. Blaydes "Listen: See: Speak"

Samantha's dry point on cloth triptych caught my eye. The red stitching is just right. While I have seen this theme done before, this work is well executed. She had a nice lino cut print "agony" downstairs as well.

Meili Peterson "Roman Sky"

Having obsessed over the sky the better part of last year I was drawn to this piece. The color in this work is great and the grid format works for me.

Nathan Porterfield "Throne" part of a triptych

Nathan Porterfield "Throne" grew on me over time. When I first saw the triptych it bugged me a little. I kept coming back to it though and it eventually won me over. The subject matter is quirky and great at the same time. His attention to detail and white space is immaculate. My photo of all three together did not turn out.

Todd Champlain "World Storm"

Camplin's "World Storm" is a really interesting pen and ink piece with fine detail.

Jennifer Pilon " Viruh:Thrust "

I loved the volumetric negative space of Pilon's piece. Not quite as fond of the scrunching at the very bottom of this work but overall it is very nice.

Loretta Gonzalez "Love Your Self"

"Love Your Self" was my wife's second favorite piece behind Bill Barter's. This work is a fun one and the captions on each tile are worth reading.

The show runs through the 1st of June so check it out before it is down. Its definitely worth seeing.

"Big Hairy Bush II" from the hair particle system drawing project

My low brow political humor piece entitled "Big Hairy Bush II" recently made its way back from San Diego CA. It made it back just in time for the 500x annual open show where I dropped it off yesterday. I am looking forward to catching part of the reception where I can see people react to it.

I also entered the print version of the very popular "blue recursive". Oddly when I printed it at 13x19 out it felt off balance so I "hand" modified the print version of "blue recursive" slightly to give the print a better sense of balance. Hopefully the print version will be as popular as the internet version getting passed around on various math art sites. .

Dave Miller is doing an automatic comedian live performance. Details are on his blog check it out. This looks like a lot of fun, he has some AI set up to act as a comedian and hecklers. There will be a live webcast too.

new reconstruction algorithm

I have been busy creating a lot of new things. I stumbled into a digital photo reconstruction algorithm completely by accident while writing some code to recursively subdivide space. I had the honor of being in a show last year with Rusty Scruby who is focused in the reconstruction space, if I had not seen what Rusty has been doing I may not have know what I stumbled into. Rusty has created his own custom software to perform his reconstructions and his work is fantastic. You should check it out.

I took the algorithm I found and I have now created a crude tool to explore photo and video reconstructions. I am still putting together a page of these new works but the general exploration is around naturally occurring mathematical forms like Lindenmayer Systems and fractal patterns.

I go out with my camera ( and the kids ) looking for interesting forms in nature, the more I explore the more I get a sense of what will create a nice visual flow and sense of motion when the image is reconstructed. Below are some samples of the output.

IO Moth Reconstruction

I found this IO Moth while doing some gardening with the kids in the front yard. It made a really nice reconstruction. I printed this one out on a 13x19 sheet of watercolor paper. It looks really nice. Prints 2-5 of 5 are available for anyone interested.

A buddy of mine, aka powerbeezus on flickr took this amazing photo of amazing glitch proportions during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live on his HD tv. I can't wait to get an HD tv and HD service if it glitches out like this. This picture is incredible.

Marisa Olson is a media artist, critic, and curator who has collaborated with SFMOMA, the Whitney Museum, White Columns, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Inspired by her private life, Marisa Olson's work uses technology to explore music fansination, Internet culture, and contemporary consciousness.

Christine Gedeon uses blue prints to create aerial compositions of political figures and celebrities. This abstract format brings a new sense of reality to publicized images of political and public figures. Christine has exhibited at A.I.R. Gallery in New York and The New Art Center of New York.

This exhibition runs through April 12th.

Using xvi32 to perform image destructions

Dick Cheney meets XVI32

Since I have been enlightened to the finer aspects of glitch imagery after discovering how nice my cable tv could look by accident; I downloaded a hex editor and started messing up images on purpose.

I have been using XVI32 a freeware hex editor to slightly modify or even massively edit image files to yield really interesting results. I have had the best luck with smaller images and sporadic but sparing hex editing, I get really nice blocky 8 bit looking destructions of the image.
