Robert Spahr crufts
Robert Spahr is a New York artist who maintains a server running scripts 24-7 to generate art. I stumbled on his work while doing some research for a similar project of my own.

Spahr writes...
Borrowing the computer hacker term Cruft I have applied it to my current series of images. I create these CRUFT images by writing recipes (also known as an algorithm). An automated system follows the instructions, first harvesting selected source material from the Internet, and then processing that information into a CRUFT, generating images 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mire Cruft (after Karl) 0507070926, July 07, 2005 9:26 am EST Created by fully automated scripts using source images from the Internet.

Spahr writes...
Juxtapostion and conflict of disparate source material has been a consistent theme in my work, ranging from images ripped from the mass media, plaster combined with tar, or the smell of butter and the sound of melting ice.

Hourly Cruft

This cruft algorithm extracts images from the NYtimes home page once every hour. The images from this page are then manipulated to generate the three panel overlapping cruft. Over time the changes or lack of change seen in the crufts reflect the news cycle of the NYtimes.com site. It has been included in the ArtBase of Rhizome.org at the New Museum.
